Good Fats help your health!

Monounsaturated Fatty Acids or MUFA are found in plant foods like nuts, avocados, olive oil, and canola oil, as well as in poultry.  MUFA’s can lower cholesterol levels and your risk of heart disease.

Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids or PUFAs are found in fish like salmon and mackerel as well as in corn and soybean oils. I personally try to avoid corn and soybean oils because they tend to be genetically modified foods.  Corn and soybeans are Omega 6 fatty acids coming from poor quality sources. We tend to eat too much of these omega 6s. We need to focus more on omega 3 fatty acids.  PUFAs also improve cholesterol levels.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids aer PUFAs are found in fish and plants.

“Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are incorporated into every cell of the body, and are key structural, metabolic, and regulatory components of cells. They improve and regulate cellular function, reduce inflammation, modulate immune response, optimize health and well-being, and help prevent chronic disease.” The AIM Companies

“There are two main sources of omega-3 fatty acids: marine sources (fatty fish) provide EPA and DHA, and plant food sources (flax, walnuts, canola oil) provide ALA….Omega-3 fatty acids have shown to lower the levels of blood triglycerides and inflammatory markers. These tend to be elevated in people with insulin resistance, who are likely to especially benefit from taking omega-3 fatty acids.” Stanford School of Medicine.

Should we supplement Omega 6 and 9?

Omega-6 content from healthy sources, such as olive oil, is lacking in the average diet. Most people consume too much omega 6 and 9 from unhealthy sources such as hydrogenated oils.  Olive oil has been found to decrease blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart attack, decrease high lipids, and reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. I do think we should supplement the 6 and 9 as well to ensure that we are consuming healthy sources.

Flaxseed oils is not only rich in omega 3 but it also contains omega 6. Sunflower and sesame oils also contain healthy sources of omega 6 and 9.

I use AIMega from The AIM Companies. It has a good ratio of organic seed oils.

■ 1,140 mg omega-3 fatty acids

■ 570 mg omega-6 fatty acids

■ 600 mg omega-9 fatty acids

Don’t be afraid to eat the real stuff.  For example, eat natural peanut butter, with no added hydrogenated oils or sugars.  Do not buy the reduced fat peanut butter thinking it will benefit your diet. They tend to add sugar, salt and corn syrup to these reduced fat products.  The real stuff contains beneficial fats so go ahead and enjoy it.  Just don’t use too much.  Did you know that there is only 32 calories in a teaspoon of peanut butter.  If you are worried about gaining weight just use 1 teaspoon.

Gluten-free can change your life

Gluten-Free Flour

Now Available

The symptoms of a person with gluten intolerance may sound familiar to many: sluggishness, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, reflux, and the list goes on. The fact is, gluten intolerance is one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in North America, and most people could benefit from a gluten-free or reduced gluten diet.

For those with gluten intolerance, their bodies cannot digest gluten, a protein that appears in wheat, rye, barley, and other grains. This leads to digestive distress and non-gastrointestinal conditions that can be uncomfortable and painful to endure.

An Idaho woman, Sherry, experienced the harsh side effects of gluten for ten years before discovering the root cause. Her many trips to the doctor over the years had yielded the same answer, “We don’t know what’s wrong with you.”

“I didn’t know what gluten was six months ago,” Sherry said, “but my daughter brought me this book, The Gluten Connection by Shari Lieberman (Holtzbrinck Publishers), and it just fit all my symptoms like acid reflux, heart palpitations, and sluggishness. So I went gluten-free!”

She also removed sugar from her diet and began supplementing with AIM products.

“It was suggested I take AIM BarleyLife® Xtra for the easily absorbed vitamins, like A, B, and K,” said Sherry, who mixes her BarleyLife with CalciAIM™. “When you have gluten intolerance, your intestines cannot absorb these fat soluble vitamins.

“After only one month, I noticed that I wasn’t tired all the time. My heart stopped skipping beats, and I didn’t have acid reflux. As for my arthritis, my fingers are not swollen anymore, and I have no joint pain.”

With a relatively easy transition to a gluten-free diet, Sherry is excited to share her positive results with others.

AIM now offers Gluten-Free flour and pizza crust mix.  AIM gluten-free all-purpose flour is a healthy baking option for those who are gluten intolerant or those who wish to benefit from the health advantages of a gluten-free diet. The flour mix can be substituted for standard flour and mixes well with many other AIM products. Gluten intolerance is now four times more common today than it was in the 1950s, and symptoms may include diarrhea, weight loss, nausea, depression, fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Blood sugar, insulin, and diabetes

Impaired insulin production or utilization can lead to Type II diabetes mellitus and its related health complications. When we eat, the body breaks down the carbohydrates in foods to produce glucose, the sugar that fuels our cells and provides them with vital energy for healthy functioning. It is extremely important for the blood glucose level to remain stable. If it is elevated, the pancreatic hormone insulin is secreted to encourage uptake of glucose by the cells. Ideally, the pancreas secretes just the right amount of insulin to efficiently metabolize glucose.

If insulin levels are consistently high, insulin resistance may develop. In this case, the pancreas pumps out insulin, but the cells are unable to properly respond, leaving the glucose to remain in the bloodstream. And the vicious cycle continues.

Insulin resistance frequently leads to weight gain because high insulin levels force the body to store fat rather than burn it as energy. Elevated levels of glucose and fats may also result in abnormally high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Over time, this can damage the vital organs, leading to heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure.

GlucoChrome for blood sugar regulation
Blood Sugar Regulation

Two major studies endorsed by the Canadian Diabetes Association showed that 58 percent of patients studied were able to prevent the development of diabetes from prediabetes simply by making positive lifestyle changes. A healthy diet and modest exercise go a long way toward keeping blood glucose levels steady.

For those who are overweight or obese, a chronic blood sugar imbalance makes weight loss very difficult. Normal insulin levels aid in the breakdown of stored fats and sugar, making weight loss possible. One element that plays such a vital role in the insulin-glucose process is chromium. Scientists consider chromium to be insulin’s cofactor. Chromium assists insulin by helping it to gain access to the cell membrane, allowing glucose to enter the cells where the body can use it.

As part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, AIM GlucoChrom is a beneficial supplement to those at risk of high blood sugar or Type II (non-insulin dependent) diabetes. The ingredients in GlucoChrom may promote fat loss or the maintenance of lean body mass and may also assist in lowering blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Hula Hoop Exercise for Easy Fun Fitness

Hooping exercise so much fun. I made my own hula hoop using 3/4″ polyethelyne pipe scraps from a local oil and propane company. It was going into the dump so I asked for it and they gave it to me. I simply used a coupling and voila it was ready to use. I like to make mine above my belly button. You can get creative and add decorative tape. The 3/4″ pipe is already yellow. Check out this video to learn more about hooping.
