Diatomaceous Earth is one of the most well known effective products for non-toxic pest control. DE is a mechanical killer- meaning, it never loses effectiveness the way that poisons do. It’s named after diatoms, the fossils of single celled organisms which have sharp edges that cut insects’ exoskeletons so that they dehydrate to death. It’s like razor wire for spider, roaches, ants, aphids, etc. Unlike boric acid (borax), it’s food safe. DE is a natural, organic insect killer. It kills by physical action and not by chemical so there is no harm to pets or humans.
What most people don’t know about DE is that it also has excellent health benefits to humans as well as animals. The National Institutes of Health found that diatomaceous earth can lower cholesterol—permanently—even after dosage stopped. “Four weeks after intake of diatomaceous earth was stopped, serum cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides still remained low and also the increase of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol became significant.” With that said, we’re talking about food grade DE. Not the kind you clean your pool with. That will KILL you.
I also discovered that it’s loaded with silica. Silica is very important to our bodies. It’s especially good for hair skin and nails. The perfect beauty product! Not to mention it’s also very economical since it’s cheap and over a thousand years old so you don’t have to worry about it ever expiring.
The best way to take DE is to add one to two tablespoons to your favorite juice, smoothies, oatmeal or other food.
After doing some research online I have compiled a list of health benefits that you can expect from DE:
Kills Parasites (internally and externally)
Healthier Teeth and Gums
Improves Bowel Movements
Lower High Blood Pressure
Hair That Grows- Using a good silica supplement (such as DE) should be part of your ongoing hair care program for revitalizing hair. Silica helps to prevent baldness, stimulates healthier hair growth and assures beautiful shine, luster and strength.
Cancer can’t survive in cells that have the correct levels of Silica.
Many People have also given DE to their pets with great results. You can sprinkle lightly on your pets coat and their bedding to kill fleas, ticks, mites, and lice. Make sure you use gloves as the DE can be drying to your skin.
Food grade DE is thought to be effective against parasitic infestations internally, within the stomach, intestines and organs of animals. Reports of parasite elimination include Tape worms, hook worms, whip worms, round worms, pinworms, lung worms and heart worms. To be effective, DE must be used for a minimum of 60 days or more. It must be used long enough to effectively kill any newly hatched eggs.
On a personal note, we used Diatomaceous earth years ago when we had gotten fleas in our home and it did get rid of them very successfully. I opted to go the DE route since our kids were pretty young and I’m all about not poisoning my children. From what I remember it only took a few days to be flea free and we never had a problem since.
