You may have heard of Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara, the man behind BarleyLife (formerly named Barley Green). Dr. Hagiwara was a very prominent doctor, researcher, inventor and scientist in Japan. His nutritional and pharmacological research, ideas and creations brought Dr. Hagiwara numerous awards, and honors, and his concern about ways to improve the health and well-being of his people has crossed international borders.
Dr. Hagiwara developed a number of synthetic drugs, including an anti-fungal agent and other compounds which are currently in use and were patented under his name. He relates that about 15 years into his research, he became increasingly aware that most of the synthetic drugs that he developed were primarily for acute conditions, and while they were very effective in alleviating these acute conditions they did not help to prevent the problems from developing in the first place. He also observed that when treating a patient with a typical synthetic drug that the condition would usually be improved, but often undesirable side effects would crop up. A good example are the steroid drugs which are used for everything from bee stings to arthritis. You can’t stay on steroid drugs forever because they create their own problems, and major problems to be sure.
So, Dr. Hagiwara decided there has to-be a better way. There just HAD to be a better way. And there was. . .a natural preventive approach which led to more than 13 years of intensive research on over 150 different plants, grains, and grasses. Dr. Hagiwara discovered that barley was not only an excellent source, but one of the richest sources, of all of the broad spectrum of nutrients required by man for growth, repair, and well-being. Barley has been cultivated in China for hundreds of years, and was used in Ancient Greece, Rome, and by the Lake Dwellers of Ancient Switzerland. Despite its medicinal and nutritional qualities, however, barley has been used primarily in this country for the brewing of beer. Fermenting barley results in malt, which in turn is used in brewing.
Dr. Hagiwara’s research and efforts to find a natural, organic, nutritional source that would have enzymatic action to counteract aging and disease was recognized by the International Foundation for Preventive Medicine at its second annual Conference on Reversing the Aging Process in November, 1981, in New York.
Almost 500 years ago, the Fountain of Youth symbolized the answer to aging — the secret elixir of good health. Ponce de Leon unfortunately grew old and died while searching for it. Scientists still haven’t found a cure for aging. There is no way to prevent aging from taking place. But, scientists believe they have found a key — genes that produce an enzyme called Superoxide Dismutase, or S.O.D.
It appears S.O.D. is a super scavenger enzyme that ferrets out and destroys the damaging free radicals, chemical byproducts of normal cellular metabolism. Free radicals are highly reactive and unstable, due to their unpaired electron, and will attack any molecule in your body, damaging many of the components of a cell, including DNA. DNA, of course, is the chemical of which genes are composed. When enough DNA is damaged, cells begin to die, contributing to the aging process. There is no cure for aging; nothing can prevent aging from taking place — but scientists now believe that perhaps S.O.D. delays it. (Science Digest, August, 1982)
The pure juice of young barley leaves happens to be one of the richest sources of this anti-aging enzyme S.O.D. The active S.O.D. occupies a part of the total mass of barley juice and is one of the highest of value found among natural sources. (S.O.D. — Old Enzyme Article)
Current research is doing much to bolster the theory that S.O.D. can actually delay or slow down the aging process. Molecular biologist Kenneth Munkres and his colleagues at the University of Wisconsin examined several strains of the same species of mold and discovered that those that lived the longest were indeed those richest in S.O.D. The implications are intriguing, for if a cell’s S.O.D. content can be manipulated, might not life spans be commensurately expanded or extended? (Science Digest, Aug., 1982)
According to the best selling book Life Extension, by Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw — which focuses on all the latest and current theories and discoveries relating to the aging process and prolonging or extending one’s life — a study by Dr. Richard Cutler, a biophysicist at the National Institute of Aging, shows that the life spans of many mammalian species, including man, were found to be directly proportional to the amount of S.O.D. they contain. The animals with the longest spans and man were found to have the highest levels of S.O.D.
If this young green barley juice, one of the richest sources of the anti-aging enzyme S.O.D., can perhaps restore or revitalize our damaged cells, longevity and rejuvenation may be achieved. Young green barley juice may also help keep the skin young, fresh, soft and beautiful. (New York Speech, pg. 7)
Radiation and Cancer
It appears that S.O.D. also plays a key role in protection from cancer and radiation therapy. S.O.D.’s chief function in contrast to the other enzymes is as a cell protector. (Best Ways, August, 1980)
Dr. Hagiwara in Japan, and biologist Dr. Jasuo Hotta, a specialist of gene engineering at the University of California at La Jolla, found that when barley juice was added to damaged cells, the DNA within the cells repaired itself very quickly. Current theories hold that both cancer and aging result when genes fail to repair themselves. In their experiments, the scientists exposed mouse cells to both radiation and a powerful cancer-causing chemical. Then they divided the cells into two sets, incubated both and added the barley juice to only one set. The “untreated” cells fared poorly; many died and others began a slow self-repair process. But the cells treated with the barley juice recovered at an accelerated rate — twice as fast as normal. When the doctors added barley juice to the mouse cells before subjecting them to radiation and a carcinogen, Hotta says the repair rate was “. . .easily three times as fast as normal.” Thus, Dr. Hagiwara’ claims, the findings may eventually help to prevent cancer, aging, or both. Benzpyrene: 17 years ago, the F.D.A. announced that benzpyrene from cigarettes and tobacco causes lung cancer. However, it was revealed at the Japan Pharmaceutical Society that this “young green barley juice” greatly reduces the risk and neutralizes the poisonous effects of benzypyrene. (New York Speech, pg. 5)
Black Char: It is well known that the black char in broiled and charcoal grilled meat contains elements which include 20,000 times more cancer—causing elements than that found in benzpyrene from tobacco. However, young green barley juice may help to protect the body from cancer by decomposing these elements. (New York Speech, pg. 5)
BHT: In a report made to the Japan Pharmaceutical Society it was revealed that a sort of peroxidase extract from green barley juice powder can counteract the poisonous effect of BHT that is found in powdered milk and processed meats. (Let’s Live, March, 1982)
So, BarleyLife, because of the many thousands of live enzymes it contains, may help to counteract the many carcinogens in the environment even though we may be exposed to these pollutants. (New York Speech, pg. 6)
Heart Attacks: Researchers in the Department of Medicine at St. Louis University have found that S.O.D. also greatly aids in the maintenance of damaged heart tissue. After a heart attack, cellular energy production is severely lowered. Prevention or delay of irreversible cell damage can be achieved by simply administering enzymes specifically aimed at maintaining the energy supply of the cell. S.O.D. may be one of those enzymes because it increases the efficiency of energy production. (Best Ways, August, 1980)
P4 D1: Recently an isolated fraction of green barley juice known as P4 D1 was announced. According to Professor Dr. Kubota of the Tokoyo Science University, this substance suppresses pancreatitis, stomatitis, inflammation of the oral cavity and dermatitis, as well as lacerations of the stomach and duodenum. It is an ideal anti-inflammatory agent and its effects are measurably stronger than steroid and non-steroid drugs. (Nutrition News, September, 1982)
Dr. Kubota also reported to the Annual Japan Pharmacy Science Association that the special fraction of green barley juice called P4 D1 produced remarkable stimulation to the repair of DNA in the reproductive cells. Dr. Kubota stated, “No stimulation of DNA repair or promotion of reproductive cell activity has been reported earlier from the use of any natural or synthetic source.” This kind of discovery might portend the achievement of a longer life. What is BarleyLife? BarleyLife is the pure juice from young barley leaves in dried or powdered form, extracted when the plants are no more than 12 inches high. At this age, the leaves have an intense bright green color, indicating high amounts of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, chlorophyll and protein. BarleyLife is 41% digestible protein. From the vitamins to the enzymes, all these micronutrients appear to have a restorative and anti-aging effect. BarleyLife is a live, natural, potent, organic food supplement. It’s not a medicine or a drug, but a live, natural, potent, organic food supplement.
Howard Lutz, former Director of the Institute for Preventive Medicine, says that “Barley grass is one of the most incredible products of this decade. It improves stamina, sexual energy, clarity of thought. . .” What better testimonial could you have than the former Director for the Institute of Preventive Medicine in Washington, D.C? (Nutrition News, September, 1982)
Why are so many people using BarleyLife? Millions of Japanese have benefitted from its use for a number of years.
Acid: Well, first of all, our bodies tend to be acid — probably a result of consuming too many processed foods. BarleyLife is alkaline, which works to balance our blood, allowing our natural healing processes to ward off infection.
Salt: Most people eat too much salt. BarleyLife is high in potassium which works to balance the sodium in salt.
Meat: Meat is high in phosphorus, low in calcium. BarleyLife is high in calcium and low in phosphorus. This balance aids utilization of all minerals, leading to stronger bones and muscles.
Pollutants: Many processed foods have unnatural preservatives, chemicals and fillers which are toxic to our bodies. BarleyLife is high in chlorophyll which helps to neutralize and remove toxins from our bodies.
Cooked Foods: Cooking and heat destroy enzymes. BarleyLife is a natural raw food with thousands of live enzymes that aid in digestion and metabolism.
Drugs: Some medicines and drugs fight disease by killing harmful bacteria. BarleyLife fights disease by strengthening the body. Strong bodies resist disease.
Vitamins and Minerals: The juice from young barley leaves contains a multitude of vitamins and minerals: 30 times as much vitamin B-1 as in milk, 6.5 times as much carotene as in spinach, 11 times the calcium in cow’s milk, nearly 5 times the iron in spinach, nearly 7 times the vitamin C in oranges, and 80 micrograms of vitamin B-12 per 100 grams of dried barley plant juice. Barley juice contains 15 times as much protein as an equivalent amount of milk, and when compared to wheat, barley juice contains 5 times as much protein, times as much calcium, 4 times the vitamin B-1, 100 times the vitamin C, 20 times the vitamin E and 26 times as much potassium as in wheat. (Let’s Live, 9/82 & New York Speach, pg. 7)
High Blood Pressure: Let’s focus on potassium for a minute. The increase in high blood pressure, heart disease and circulatory diseases has been attributed partially to the over—consumption of salt and high sodium levels. It has been found, however, that many of the drugs that alleviate the high sodium levels also tend to deplete the body of potassium so the result may be a lowered blood pressure, but also fatigue, because of the lack of potassium. Research has shown that if potassium is simply added to the diet it balances and neutralizes the sodium levels and helps to lower the blood pressure. BarleyLife happens to be an excellent source of potassium as well as calcium and a lot of other minerals that the body requires for health and well-being.
In addition, research has shown that there may be a sort of glycoprotein in BarleyLife which may help to lower high blood pressure. (New York Speech, pg. eight)
Enzymes: So, now we see that BarleyLife is beginning to set itself apart from other food supplements because of the multitude of vitamins and minerals it contains, but what really sets BarleyLife apart from other food supplements are the thousands of live enzymes. The anti-aging enzyme S.O.D. is one of the most important. These enzymes aid in digestion and metabolism, and also help to disperse vitamins and minerals easily. These thousands of live enzymes also help to purge the body of the toxins, poisons, and pollutants that are absorbed through the air, water and the food we consume.
Water is polluted with many chemicals and heavy metals. Air is polluted with smog which contains deadly petroleum byproducts. Our foods contain lots of chemical substances and manufactured foodstuffs are virtually devoid of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Barley juice helps to neutralize these poisons and toxins. (New York Speech, pg. 1)
Chlorophyll: Barley juice is a superlative source of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has a molecular structure almost exactly like that of hemoglobin, the protein found in red blood cells. Our blood, however, contains an atom of iron, while chlorophyll contains an atom of magnesium. It Is known that in experiments with anemic animals red blood cell count, even in the most anemic animals, returned to normal within 4 to 5 days after chlorophyll had been administered. (Nutrition News, September, 1982)
So, chlorophyll helps to build a high blood count and improve anemic conditions; provides iron to organs, counteracts toxins, helps purify the liver, improves blood sugar problems, including diabetes; helps sores heal faster, resists bacteria in wounds; cleans tooth and gum structure in pyorrhea, gingivitis and other gum diseases; soothes ulcer tissues; and, by the way, chlorophyll also helps to beautify the skin from within. (Remedial Effects of Chlorophyll)
Health Insurance: BarleyLife is the best health insurance you can buy — natural, preventive health care. There is a price to pay for health. You can pay now to stay healthy, or. . .pay later to relieve pain and suffering.
Several million people in Japan have been taking BarleyLife for a number of years with very beneficial results. Now it’s available to us.
Dr. Howard Lutz, former Director of the Institute for Preventive Medicine in Washington, D.C., recommends that everyone drink a minimum of a teaspoonful of barley juice powder in 8 ounces of water daily, as part of his suggested program for looking ten years younger. Again, that’s quite a testimonial, coming from the former Director of the Institute of Preventive Medicine, in Washington, D.C.
BarleyLife supplies the necessary nutrients to naturally and nutritionally aid in the maintenance of health.

Back when we lived in San Antonio my wife and I drove down to the border town of Larado doing a little meeting there for a hispanic women. This elderly lady came in with her hands & fingers constricted like claws from arthritis. I was amazed at how bad they were. She continued to work every day with her hands like that. I had suggested that she start taking large amounts of BarleyLife. When I say large amounts I am talking about 5 to 7 tablespoons each day spread out through the day. We went back there about a month later and she comes up to me with tears of joy running down her face saying in Spanish look, look and moving her fingers around freely, look at what this has done for me arthritis.
Smokey, our 15-year old cat, had always had a very protruding belly. The veterinarians simply recommended a petroleum- based cat laxative, and she stayed on that for 11 years. This July, Smokey stopped eating and began hiding — an ominous sign for a feline, especially an older one. My mom, who now has Smokey at her new home in Southern Oregon, took Smokey to a local vet who diagnosed her with lymphoma after palpating some painful lumps in her belly, which caused her to growl (Smokey never growled at all previously.) Dr. Poet put Smokey on steroid injections, and then switched her to prednisone tablets. My mom told me the medication was allowing Smokey to resume eating. But I wanted more for my cat than steroid-induced eating. I know that at some point, the Prednisone would begin to cause her problems and that the longer one takes steroids, the harder it is to get off them.
LUCKILY, Dr. Poet was a veterinarian with a true compassion for animals. Last week I accompanied my mom and Smokey to her 3-month follow- up exam. Dr. Poet entered the room with a somber expression. I told him that we had been giving Smokey BarleyLife ¼ teaspoon with water, am & pm for about 7 weeks in addition to her prednisone. Smokey had gained back the pound she lost and was more active than she had been in a long time. She played with toys and wanted to be let out on the front lawn where she explored the landscaping under supervision. I told Dr. Poet that we wanted to wean Smokey off the Prednisone with his permission and guidance. He observed Smokey and carefully palpated her belly. Smokey made no sound. He acknowledged that he did not feel the tumors like last time and that “She’s like a different cat.” Dr. Poet instructed us to “give her the natural stuff,” cut her Prednisone dose in half, and instructed my mom and Smokey to return in one month for follow- up. I am so pleased. My mom tells Smokey the BarleyLife juice is “grass” and she doesn’t mind having it syringed into her mouth twice a day. I know each time Smokey takes it, it detoxifies her at the cellular level. Also, since my mom has had to start giving her the petroleum laxative twice a day in the past year, we have started Smokey on one once daily. We are keeping a close watch on our beloved little pet, and so far she’s better than she’s been in years. I am so grateful for catching the testimonial DVD about the nurse who recovered from lymphoma, after her doctors gave up, by using BarleyLife. Thank God I made the connection – between lymphoma in people and lymphoma in cats, and decided there was nothing to lose. Smokey looks great!
I take BarleyLife Xtra, JustCarrots, RediBeets & LeafGreens every morning and my pH is balanced and my energy is great naturally!
