Your digestive health is very important and fiber plays a big role in keeping your digestive health at its best. Fiber is important for your body in several ways. (1) Fiber helps to prevent disease, (2) Fiber helps to relieve constipation and hemorrhoids, and (3) Fiber helps to control weight. Your digestive health is important if you are to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Fiber helps to relieve and avoid constipation, which can be major upset in your digestive health. Fiber has the ability to absorb huge amounts of water from the bowels, which in turn makes stools softer and much easier to pass. You may want to increase the amount of fiber in your diet if you are trying to improve your digestive health. When you first increase the amount of fiber in your diet you will notice that there is a difference in your stool, however after a few days of increasing the fiber in your diet you will notice no difference. Increasing the fiber in your diet will improve your digestive health by relieving constipation as well as make it easier to pass your stools, putting you at less a risk for hemorrhoids.

Fiber is a term for all parts of plant foods the body cannot digest. Found in all fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains and legumes, fiber travels through the body without breaking down. It passes through the body and makes a quick exit. Though fiber has no calories and is not absorbed by the body, it has a variety of health benefits, such as assisting in weight loss and constipation and helping regulate various gastrointestinal disorders.

There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble.

Soluble Fiber–Soluble fiber forms a gel in the digestive tract, which slows digestion and prevents the body from absorbing too much starch and sugar.  Soluble fiber is the type commonly found in over-the-counter laxatives. Dried beans, peas, oats, apples, citrus fruits, carrots and barley are good sources of natural soluble fiber.

Insoluble fiber–absorbs water, creating bulkier stool. It also helps the bowels move quickly through the digestive tract, which is helpful to people who suffer from constipation or irregular bowel movements. Insoluble fiber is found in whole-wheat flour, wheat bran, nuts, various vegetables and peels of fruit, such as apples, blueberries and grapes.
