Fireworks Safety

Fireworks Safety

Published

July is known as one of the months that we can expect to see some spectacular fireworks display. Using fireworks at celebration time is as American as apple pies and backyard barbecues. Fireworks related accidents do occur each year, so it is important to follow the fireworks safety tips from The National Council on Fireworks Safety:

  • Use fireworks outdoors only.
  • Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.
  • Always have water handy. (A hose or bucket).
  •  Only use fireworks as intended. Don’t try to alter them or combine them.
  •  Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a “designated shooter.”
  • Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.
  • Do not ever use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives: They can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community.

Nutrition that works! One of the most common type of  fireworks related injuries is burns.  A serious burn on the skin is one of the most traumatic injuries that the body can sustain. There are three basic classifications of burns on the skin, each varying in severity. First-degree burns affects only the outer layer of the skin causing redness and sensitivity to the touch.  Second-degree burns extend somewhat into underlying layers causing redness, blistering and pain. In third-degree burns, the entire thickness of the skin and tissues such as muscles are destroyed. While your body is recovering from a burn it is important to drink plenty of fluids and focus on getting adequate protein and nutrient-dense foods to help in the repair and healing process.

Follow the fireworks safety tips to prevent injuries! Building a diet around whole foods, drinking eight glasses of pure water daily, and using AIM supplements will nourish cells to be their best.
