UV Safety Tips for Having Fun in The Sun
Published
Summertime is fun in the sun time whether it is in the backyard, at the pool, the beach or vacationing on some island where fun meets tranquility and a great appreciation for nature. Picture yourself on your getaway basking in the sunshine on the beach- a stretch of white sand. Ahhh…..those warming sun rays feel good. They help your body produce vitamin D, an essential nutrient for building strong and healthy bones. The body needs sunshine, but getting too much of it can cause damage to the skin and the eyes.
Sunburn is caused by excessive exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. There are two types of ultraviolet rays, known as ultraviolet-A (UVA) and ultraviolet-B (UVB). Both are dangerous. UVB rays attack the skin’s outer layers, while UVA rays attack the underlying layers. UV rays can also damage the eye’s surface tissues as well as the cornea and lens. However, you can still enjoy some time in the glorious sunshine with the help of these UV safety tips:
- Always stay out of the sun when it is at it’s hottest.
- When outdoors, wear a sun hat and protective clothing.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
- Wear sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays.
- Sunglasses should wrap all the way around to your temples, so the sun’s rays can’t enter from the side.
- Still take precautions on cloudy or hazy days as the sun can still be powerful.
Dietary nutrients such as carotenes are helpful in protecting the skin from sunlight. Building a diet around whole foods, drinking eight glasses of pure water daily, and using AIM supplements will nourish cells to be their best.
