Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
Published
Fruits and vegetables are part of a well-balanced and healthy eating plan. They provide essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and other substances that are important for good health. When choosing your produce, look for fruits and vegetables that are at the peak of ripeness. These contain more vitamins and enzymes than those that are under-ripe or overripe. Purchase only the amount that you can use in a short time, because the longer a food is kept in storage, the more nutrients it loses.
Once you get your produce home, running water and vegetable brush should be all that is needed to get them ready for the table. However, if the produce is not organic, you will want to wash them more thoroughly to rid them of any chemical residue or even peel them if they are waxed. It is better to eat the whole fruit, including the skin, because it contains valuable nutrients as well as the added fiber that helps you feel full. If raw vegetables does not agree with you, steam them lightly. Cooking them for too long can destroy many valuable nutrients. If fresh produce is not available, use frozen instead. There are many ways to add more fruits and vegetables to your plate such as adding chopped fruit to main-dish salads and also using them as a snack. Making wise food choices is an important element in a healthy lifestyle.
