Stress can Cause Health Problems

Stress can Cause Health Problems

Published

Stress can be wrapped in many different packages such as in a job, marriage problems, injury, financial worries, children, pain in the body, an illness, pollution, nutritional imbalance, or the death of a friend or family member.

Stress Causes Health Problems

Too much stress can cause many health problems over time.  Stress can affect the bones, muscles, heart, mood, energy, immune system, blood sugar, sleep, thyroid, and even a person’s memory. Research has shown that stress contributes to 80 percent of major illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, mental disorders, digestive conditions (ulcers, colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome), injuries, headaches, nervous system diseases, endocrine and metabolic diseases, cancers, skin disorders, arthritis, and many kinds of infections and illnesses.

Stress and Weight Gain

Stress is known to cause some people to eat food when they are not hungry.  For many people, food can act as a form of comfort. Stress can cause the body to release cortisol in the body which can cause extra fat to be stored in the abdominal region.  Studies show that this kind of “stress fat” can be hard to lose no matter how much the person exercises or how healthy they eat because they have not addressed the root cause of the stress.

Stress Reduction

Studies show that there are many ways to reduce stress which can help to reverse the 80 percent of illnesses (mentioned above) caused by stress.    Exercise, eating more fruits and vegetables, and eating less processed sugar has been shown to decrease stress hormones in the body as well as rest, relaxation, and sleep.  Some people find that listening to music, a warm or hot bath, massage, or just deep breathing can all help to decrease stress which can improve the health of the human body.
